After 28 years of R&D, Boston Dynamics launches an online robot store.

Boston Dynamics' site calls Spot "a stable, dynamically balanced quadruped robot that can navigate through unstructured, unknown, or antagonistic terrain with ease.". Spot is a platform, Boston Dynamics handles the locomotion, and it's your job to develop programs and attach extra equipment to make Spot useful.. The Spot bots got a lot smaller with the "SpotMini" in 2016 , a 55-pound robot that dumped the hydraulics system of the original Spot and went with an all-electric locomotion system.. Spot is not a toy, and the Boston Dynamics mentions several times that the robot can be dangerous.. Thanks to the range of payloads, Boston Dynamics has a whole list of useful things you could make Spot do: remote inspection and gauge reading with the camera, thermal inspection and gas and radiation detection with special sensors, and tunnel inspection in a blast site.. Previously, Boston Dynamics survived on US military contracts; it got funding from DARPA to develop robotic pack mules BigDog and AlphaDog , along with Petman , a bipedal, sweating robot (that's right, the robot perspired ) for testing chemical-defense clothing.. Correction: We originally pegged the Spot Android tablet as running Android 5.1, which is what JXD says on its website, but Boston Dynamics got in touch to say their controller actually runs Android 8.1 , which is a lot newer.

The internet’s favorite four-legged robot is now on sale.

This is partly due to a recent software update coded by Boston Dynamics engineers working from home with their own Spot units .. One feature that Boston Dynamics is currently working on is remote teleoperation.. A demo version of this feature will be available to potential Spot customers who will be able to take a unit for a test drive in a robot assault course in the company’s headquarters.. I was able to try the teleoperation feature myself, driving a Spot unit around the company’s Boston testing range from my home, some 4,000 miles away in London.. Boston Dynamics says it will be releasing a similar teleoperation program to customers this year, and that another update in the works for 2020 is a head-mounted robot arm, which will open a range of new applications.. “If there’s a harmful use, then the license would be invalidated, and the customer wouldn’t be able to use the robot,” says Perry.. “So long as the robot’s not being used to harm or intimidate people,” he says.. Customers will also be limited to buying two robots at a time, and larger orders will need to be discussed with Boston Dynamics.

Boston Dynamics is teaching its robot dog Spot new tricks.

On Tuesday the company announced three new products for Spot — Spot Arm, Spot Enterprise and Scout — that aim to increase the robot's functionality in hazardous, remote work sites.. With the new arm extension, three Spots can get together for a bit of jump rope , according to the company.Spot Arm also gives Spot more functional qualities — specifically grabbing and carrying objects, and even opening doors.. Spot Enterprise is a new self-charging version of the robot, which can perform longer inspections and then return to its dock to charge itself.. The company said it upgraded hardware for Spot Enterprise, so that it can work alone for longer, have extended WiFi and download large data sets more quickly.. Scout is the new web-based software for Spot, and it's designed for hazardous tasks in workplaces such as nuclear plants and offshore oil fields without putting human workers at risk.. Workers can control Spot remotely and view the workplace via robot camera.. Boston Dynamics has been developing and promoting Spot for years but only just brought the robot to market this past June.. The robotic dogs are available to US businesses for $74,500 a piece , and the company estimates there are now more than 400 Spot models in the world.. "Since first launching Spot, we have worked closely with our customers to identify how the robot could best support their mission critical applications," said Robert Playter, Boston Dynamics CEO, in a press release.. We developed the new Spot products with these needs in mind.". The pricing for Spot Enterprise, Scout and Spot Arm haven't been publicly announced and the Boston Dynamics sales team did not immediately respond to comment.

As Verne understood, the U.S. Civil War (during which 60,000 amputations were performed) inaugurated the modern prosthetics era in the United States, thanks to federal funding and a wave of design patents filed by entrepreneurial prosthetists. The two World Wars solidified the for-profit prosthetics...

After being born missing my left forearm, I was one of the first cohorts of infants in the United States to be fitted with a myoelectric prosthetic hand, an electronic device controlled by the wearer’s muscles tensing against sensors inside the prosthetic socket.. Since then, I have donned a variety of prosthetic hands, each of them striving toward perfect fidelity of the human hand—sometimes at a cost of aesthetics, sometimes a cost of functionality, but always designed to mimic and replace what was missing.. In my lifetime, myoelectric hands have evolved from clawlike constructs to multigrip, programmable, anatomically accurate facsimiles of the human hand, most costing tens of thousands of dollars.. And as recent research concludes, much simpler and far less expensive prosthetic devices can perform many tasks equally well, and the fancy bionic hands, despite all of their electronic options, are rarely used for grasping.. Spiers says the anthropomorphic robotic hand is inescapable, from the reality of today’s prosthetics to the fantasy of sci-fi and anime.. But he has talked to enough of them to know they don’t share his point of view: “I get the feeling that people love the idea of humans being great, and that hands are what make humans quite unique.” Nearly every university robotics department Spiers visits has an anthropomorphic robot hand in development.. The vast majority of people who use a prosthetic limb are unilateral amputees—people with amputations that affect only one side of the body—and they virtually always use their dominant “fleshy” hand for delicate tasks such as picking up a cup.. Such evaluations seem designed to demonstrate what the prosthetic hand can do rather than to determine how useful it actually is in the daily life of its user.. To find out how prosthetic users live with their devices, Spiers led a study that used cameras worn on participants’ heads to record the daily actions of eight people with unilateral amputations or congenital limb differences.. The study, published last year in IEEE Transactions on Medical Robotics and Bionics, included several varieties of myoelectric hands as well as body-powered systems, which use movements of the shoulder, chest, and upper arm transferred through a cable to mechanically operate a gripper at the end of a prosthesis.. Also apparent was how much time people spent preparing their myoelectric prostheses to carry out a task—it frequently took several extra seconds to manually or electronically rotate the wrists of their devices, line up the object to grab it just right, and work out the grip approach. The participant who hung a bottle of disinfectant spray on their “hook” hand while wiping down a kitchen counter seemed to be the one who had it all figured out.. Despite the conclusions of his study, Spiers says the vast majority of prosthetics R&D remains focused on refining the grasping modes of expensive, high-tech bionic hands.. If we’ve decided that what makes us human is our hands, and what makes the hand unique is its ability to grasp, then the only prosthetic blueprint we have is the one attached to most people’s wrists.. While many limb-different people have used bionic hands to interact with the world and express themselves, the centuries-long effort to perfect the bionic hand rarely centers on our lived experiences and what we want to do in our lives.

The company’s robotic quadruped, “Spot,” is now for sale on shop.bostondynamics.com , where you can take home your very own robotic dog for a cool $74,500.. Boston Dynamics’ site calls Spot “a stable, dynamically balanced quadruped robot that can navigate through unstructured, unknown, or antagonistic terrain with ease.” Spot is a platform, Boston Dynamics handles the locomotion, and it’s your job to develop programs and attach extra equipment to make Spot useful.. Spot has a 360-degree field of view for navigation, thanks to stereo monochrome cameras on the front, back, and sides of the robot.. You can also just tap on the live video feed that Spot sends to the tablet and it will walk to that point.. And since this is a Boston Dynamics robot, it is ready to handle your abuse.. Previously, Spot has been seen being victimized by an evil human on Boston Dynamics’ YouTube channel.. Spot is not a toy, and the Boston Dynamics mentions several times that the robot can be dangerous.. Making Spot do something useful usually means attaching a payload and working with the Spot SDK , which uses Python.. Besides the ability to engineer a custom payload, the commercialization of serious robots means there’s a range of ready-to-go accessories for your robodog, which are also available on shop.bostondynamics.com for eye-popping prices.. If you want serious 3D vision with some lidar, the Spot EAP (Enhanced Autonomy Package) will add a Velodyne VLP-16 lidar puck to the top, along with a “Spot Core” compute package for $18,450.. In addition to Spot, the company sells the “Pick” vision system for pallet robots, which can help your robot arm sort through stacks of mixed-SKU boxes.. In the box, you get Spot, the tablet/controller, two batteries, a charger, and cases for the robot and accessories.

Here's everything we know about Boston Dynamics' first commercial robot

Boston Dynamics has finally released details on price, availability, and applications for its Spot quadruped robot.. And if you’re in the market for a robot dog, here’s everything we know about Boston Dynamics’ plans for Spot.. Boston Dynamics says it wants to get Spots out to initial customers that “either have a compelling use case or a development team that we believe can do something really interesting with the robot,” says VP of business development Michael Perry .. In recent decades, the overwhelming focus of research into and development of new artificial hands has been on perfecting different types of grasps.. But why does it need to be a human hand?. For myoelectric users, the device was used for grasping just 40 percent of the time.. But it’s more important that we get to live the lives we want, with access to the tools we need, than it is to make us look like everyone else.
